Meet the gardeners and their garden

In 2020 jane and Jonathan moved to Wonthaggi in search of a lifestyle change that would allow them to live within their means.  jane is a firm believer in the benefits of planning and budgeting and the couple decided that a key element of an affordable lifestyle involved growing their own food, cooking most meals at home and having a well-stocked pantry and freezer filled with the preserves, pickles, passata and frozen vegetables derived from their productive garden.

Come to see, learn and be inspired!

  • The well-mulched vegetable beds, built by Jonathan are designed to allow netting and are raised for easier access while gardening

  • Check out the new landscaped frog pond adjacent to the expansive vegetable garden

  • jane finds that dwarf rootstock fruit trees are ideal for smaller gardens to limit their overall size and spread

  • 25 fruit trees are dotted around the garden including oranges, lemons, mandarins, nectarines, figs, pomegranates, apples, peaches, plums, apricots and a plumcott (hybrid plum/apricot), complemented by berries including blueberries and strawberries

  • jane will have a table showcasing her preserving and passata equipment and will offer advice to visitors about preserving including the bulk quantities of vegetables that need to be grown to produce sufficient jars of preserves, passata and dried beans for year-long access to home-grown and cooked food

  • Water is an essential element to attract birds, so the garden includes several birdbaths, while native shrubs and flowers also play a role in attracting birds, insects and pollinators

  • jane’s book, Budget, Cook, Grow, includes advice on seasonal planting, food preserving and budgeting, highly relevant to meeting the increasing costs of living; see: https://janebaridesign.com.au/
